My interest in health care began as a child watching my parents navigate the world of medicine as a medical doctor and a registered nurse in small town Maine, USA. Through the years I listened to my parents describe their struggles and joys in providing patient care. As I grew & traveled, I also listened to the stories of people pursuing their own health--their struggles and challenges. I came to understand health as an incredibly complex & dynamic state unique to each individual. Our sense of health comes from balance in mind, body, & spirit. And is ultimately affected by not only our external world, but also the internal environment we cultivate for ourselves. Furthermore, I recognize that as life is ever changing for each of us, so too is our state of health. Naturopathic medicine has provided me with tools to help identify imbalances in my life and encouraged me to take control of my health. I truly believe that through the principles of naturopathic medicine I can empower and guide people in making healthy choices, finding balance in their lives, and maintaining a sense of health & well being.

Educational background

Martha is a 2004 graduate of the Canadian School of Naturopathic Medicine, Toronto, Ontario. She is an Ontario registered/licensed naturopathic doctor, and a member of both the Canadian and Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors. Previous to her naturopathic studies, Martha completed an honours bachelors degree in Family & Social Relations at the University of Guelph.

Approach to care

It is essential that any approach to health care consider all aspects of the individual: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Martha strives to touch on all of these components when assessing clients. Treatment plans work to provide the necessary support for healing and growth in each aspect of the individual, and include referrals to other professionals as needed. Martha believes that the power and capacity to heal lies within each individual, and views her work with clients as a partnership.

Hope for the future

Martha recognizes the vital role that nurses, medical doctors, and other health care professionals play in health care today. She also sees the importance in naturopathic medicine as a form of health care that focuses on prevention and health maintenance, rather than solely disease treatment. She hopes to someday see a health care model within Canada that fully utilizes the various approaches to wellness, and looks forward to being a part of this wave of change.
